Port Alfred is a seaside resort and fishing village, situated at the mouth of the Kowie River. It is known as the "Heart of the Sunshine Coast", midway between Port Elizabeth and East London on South Africa's beautiful Eastern Cape coast. It was originally known as Port Kowie, renamed Port Frances and finally called Port Alfred to commemorate the visit of Queen Victoria"s son in 1860. It is a centre for water sports, offering excellent surfing, yachting and water skiing. Visitors can enjoy walks along the long sandy beaches, or venture off in to the surrounding countryside for a round of golf or a wander along one of many excellent hiking trails. The port was at its most productive in the late 1800's but fell into disuse in later years. It has been redeveloped and now houses the Royal Alfred Marina.
