Phalaborwa Airport was formerly known as Van Eck Airport. It is located near Phalaborwa town in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The airport code is PHW and it is a national airport. The airport is known as the gateway to the Kruger National Park. The airport buildings are unique. They are designed with an African aesthetic style and show that all airports do not need to look alike.
Phalaborwa is a large town situated at half way up along the length of the Kruger National Park. It is often referred to as the land of two summers because its average winter temperature is about the same as the average summer temperature of the rest of South Africa. Centuries ago Sotho tribes first settled in the area. Finding themselves in a favourable fertile bushveld valley, they named the region Phalaborwa meaning "better than the South" and settled there, leaving evidence of mining in clay smelting ovens of iron and copper. Mining of phospates, copper and other minerals became the mainstay of Phalaborwa. The world's deepest open cast mine is located here and has a diameter of just less than two kilometers. The recently completed headgear, necessary for the underground mining, is the world's tallest. A visit to the view point is a must, as is the mine museum. The town is neatly laid out, with shopping malls, modern banking facilities and all the major chain stores represented, allowing the visitor all the excuse needed to spend time shopping.
