Middelburg is a large farming and industrial town in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The town was founded in 1852 on the banks of the Little Brak River and was named for its central position to the surrounding towns of Cradock, Colesburg, Richmond and Hofmeyer.
The church council of Colesburg agreed to pay farmer Jan Coetzee for his farm Driefontein on the 6 April 1852, exactly two centuries after Jan van Riebeck landed at the Cape. Despite its position in the dry and arid central Karoo, the town has a copious underground water supply and has never had water rationing. This is a farming area producing fine merino wool and some excellent stud farms.
