Germiston in the East Rand of Gauteng is South Africa's sixth largest city with 70% of the western world's gold passing through its gold refinery. It is also the oldest of the city in Ekurhuleni. Germiston has South Africa's biggest railway junction and the busiest civil airport, Rand Airport.
It was established in the early days of the gold rush by two prospectors from a farm called Germiston near Glasgow, Scotland. John Jack and August Simmer, struck gold on the farm of Elandsfontein. Both men made fortunes and the township was planned, laid out and named Germiston by them. In 1921 the world's largest gold refinery, the Rand Refinery, was established at Germiston.
Germiston is now part of the Ekuralenhi Metropolitan Municipality which includes much of the East Rand, also the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Area.
